Agricultural machinery manufacturer John Deere announced plans to close its historic Ottumwa Works factory in Ottumwa, Iowa—acquired from Dain Manufacturing in 1911 as the company’s first Iowa plant—after consolidating hay and foraging equipment production into its Des Moines Works facility in Ankeny. Deere will transfer windrower assembly to Des Moines Works by the end of fiscal year 2027 and round baler production by the end of fiscal year 2028. While Ottumwa city officials estimate the plant closure will affect about 400 jobs, Deere stated that approximately 300 workers would be impacted at normal production volumes, following 75 layoffs noticed in January 2025 and more than 100 early retirements. Deere also plans to close its Hagie factory in Clarion by fiscal year 2029.
Home sustainability workshops, wildlife habitat carpentry, and historic estate illuminations fill the Bay Area calendar through late November 2026. On Sunday, November 15 at 2 p.m. at Independence Hall (2955 Woodside Road, Woodside), nature educator John Gallagher will share step-by-step instructions for building nesting boxes along with photographs of Western screech owls and owlets raised on his Danville property to support pesticide-free rodent control. The regional lineup also features Sunday’s free Repair Café at the Museum of American Heritage in Palo Alto (11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on November 8, limit 2 items per household), Gamble Garden’s 2-hour worm composting workshop, Filoli’s Holiday Lights running November 14 through January 10 with 28 miles of lights and a 210-foot light tunnel (tickets from $45), and Baylands king tides rising above 9 feet on November 24–26.
New architectural renderings from GE-T Architecture Workshop and developer Silvera Properties detail a 12-story, 60-unit residential condominium development at 536 West 28th Street—spanning the through-block parcel at 533 West 27th Street between Tenth and Eleventh Avenues—steps from the High Line in Manhattan’s West Chelsea district. Silvera Properties purchased the site from Extell Development in June 2023 for $24.5 million and filed demolition permits for its previous 3-story commercial structure in December 2024. Rising 135 feet across approximately 77,000 square feet, the project organizes two 12-story volumes around a landscaped central courtyard and incorporates a 10th-floor setback, ground-floor retail, and cellar-to-rooftop wellness amenities.
