City of Pleasant Hill officials, Contra Costa County Library administrators, and volunteers from the Friends of the Pleasant Hill Library inaugurated a 2,100-square-foot Outdoor Solar Reading Pavilion and Wi-Fi Study Courtyard on Friday afternoon at the Pleasant Hill Library campus at 2 Monticello Avenue and Oak Park Boulevard. Designed to expand quiet study and community gathering capacity adjacent to the two-year-old net-zero library building, the architectural Douglas fir and steel shade canopy shelters fourteen custom cedar study tables, tiered redwood amphitheater steps for children's storytimes, and a native pollinator rain garden. Bifacial solar panels integrated into the pavilion roof feed a 30-kilowatt-hour battery bank tucked inside the courtyard bench bases.

Every outdoor table is outfitted with weatherproof 120-volt AC outlets, fast-charging USB-C ports, and glare-free warm LED task strips that remain powered until 9:00 PM each evening. Two high-density Wi-Fi 6E outdoor mesh access points extend the library's gigabit fiber network across the entire courtyard and adjacent Oak Park Boulevard bike plaza, allowing Diablo Valley College students, remote workers, and middle schoolers from nearby Pleasant Hill Middle School to work or download e-books even outside indoor branch operating hours.

Along the western edge of the courtyard overlooking the Las Juntas Creek restoration corridor, landscape architects planted drought-tolerant California fescue, western redbud trees, and fragrant Cleveland sage irrigated solely by rooftop rainwater harvested into a 4,000-gallon cistern. Acoustic cedar slat screens along the perimeter soften roadway traffic sound from Oak Park Boulevard by nearly 9 decibels.

The $265,000 courtyard expansion was funded without taxpayer debt through a $175,000 bequest managed by the Friends of the Pleasant Hill Library paired with a $90,000 California State Library Forward infrastructure grant. Residents can check outdoor storytime schedules, reserve courtyard acoustic concert seats, or view branch hours on the Contra Costa County Library Pleasant Hill Portal.
