Diablo Valley College (DVC) announced a major expansion of its campus food pantry and emergency student assistance center on Monday morning, opening a newly renovated 2,400-square-foot Basic Needs Resource Hub inside the Student Center on its Pleasant Hill campus. Supported by a $450,000 philanthropic endowment and state community college equity grants, the facility provides fresh local produce, shelf-stable groceries, hygiene necessities, and emergency book vouchers to enrolled students.

DVC President Susan Lamb and Contra Costa Community College District governing board trustees toured the distribution facility on Monday, highlighting that food security directly correlates with academic retention and graduation rates. District surveys revealed that approximately one in three local community college students has experienced housing or food insecurity during their academic journeys. The expanded center partners directly with the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano to receive weekly deliveries of organic vegetables, dairy, and wholesome proteins.

Student government leaders and volunteer campus ambassadors welcomed hundreds of fellow students during Monday's grand reopening. In addition to grocery distribution, the Basic Needs Center provides on-site CalFresh enrollment counselors, emergency rental assistance liaisons, and transportation Clipper Card vouchers for commuters traveling on County Connection and BART. A satellite distribution kiosk at the DVC San Ramon Campus will also expand operations to three days a week beginning in November.

Community members from Concord, Martinez, Lafayette, and Walnut Creek attended the dedication ceremony, pledging additional food drive support. Student leaders remarked that accessible campus pantries remove the stigma of seeking basic nutrition assistance, allowing scholars to focus wholeheartedly on academic excellence.

Students, faculty, and community members wishing to donate or volunteer can explore distribution hours, CalFresh eligibility guidelines, and donation drop-off locations online at dvc.edu. Inquiries regarding student support services may be directed to the DVC Basic Needs Coordinator Monday through Friday between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM at (925) 685-1230. The college foundation will host its annual holiday community food drive starting next Monday.
