Google Clarifies K-12 Administrative Controls Ahead of January 2027 Gemini Workspace Transition
Mountain View technology giant Google moved this week to reassure school administrators that districts are not being forced to activate its Gemini AI chatbot inside K-12 classrooms. Concerns surfaced following an October 28 report by technology publication The Register, which highlighted a Google notification stating that starting in January 2027, Gemini will be bundled into standard Google Workspace for Education suites, with a transition window running from October 2026 to January 2027 during which core applications such as Gmail and Google Docs remain contractually separate from Gemini.
Google spokesperson José Castañeda told SFGATE that reclassifying Gemini from an Additional Service to a Core Service after January 2027 simply places the AI assistant under the same enterprise privacy and security terms that govern Gmail and Docs, rather than altering whether schools must use it. Castañeda emphasized that district IT administrators can still disable Gemini at the organizational unit or group level and keep the tool turned off by default for students, faculty, and staff. An April 2026 evaluation by the Institute for AI Policy and Strategy found that Google's Gemini 2.5 Pro model consistently refused harmful instructions and directed sensitive student wellness queries to crisis help resources.
Impulse Space Wins Two NASA VADR Task Orders for 2028 Lunar Surface Missions
In commercial spaceflight, Redondo Beach-based Impulse Space announced on November 7, 2026 that it received two task orders from NASA under the Venture-Class Acquisition of Dedicated and Rideshare (VADR) Launch Services contract to transport NASA payloads directly to the lunar surface. Founded in 2021 by Chief Executive Officer Tom Mueller—a founding employee of SpaceX who led SpaceX's Propulsion Engineering division for 18 years—Impulse Space will execute both lunar deliveries on missions targeted to launch in 2028.
Each mission pairs Impulse Space's high-energy Helios kick stage with its proprietary Lunar Lander to carry payload suites from low Earth orbit to lunar touchdown. One 2028 mission will launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, while the second 2028 mission will fly aboard a Relativity Space Terran R launch vehicle. Impulse Space has already flown its in-space mobility spacecraft, Mira, across four orbital missions since 2023.
Former Meta and Microsoft Engineers Launch Codeflash With $4.2 Million Seed Round
In developer infrastructure, San Francisco startup Codeflash—founded by former Meta and Microsoft engineers Manish Gill (CEO) and Saurabh Misra (CTO)—launched its Continuous Optimization platform backed by $4.2 million in seed funding. The $4.2 million round was co-led by heavybit and mana ventures, with angel and institutional participation from Vercel CEO Guillermo Rauch, Datadog President Amit Agarwal, and Factorial Capital.
Integrated directly into continuous integration workflows and GitHub pull requests, Codeflash profiles runtime execution, generates candidate code optimizations, benchmarks real-world latency gains, and formally verifies behavioral equivalence before changes are merged. Engineering teams have already used Codeflash to accelerate open-source Python and AI libraries including Pydantic, LangChain, Roboflow Supervision, Albumentations, Kornia, and PyPDF.
Masterhooks Pays Over $3 Million to 12,000 Creators Across 2 Billion Views in 2026
