Public works engineers and recreation managers with the City of Oakley Parks and Recreation Division welcomed East Contra Costa families and Diablo Valley musicians on Sunday afternoon to dedicate four architectural tensioned shade sails, accessible concrete concert terraces, and upgraded stage audio-power infrastructure at the Civic Center Park Amphitheater at 3231 Main Street in downtown Oakley. Anchoring the heart of Oakley's civic and retail plaza beside City Hall, the oak-shaded amphitheater hosts Friday Night Bites food-truck gatherings, the Oakley Almond Festival, Movies in the Plaza, and summer youth theater performances.
Because afternoon Delta sun across the west-facing amphitheater bowl previously pushed lawn surface temperatures above 95 degrees during early-evening concerts and autumn festivals, structural steel crews sank eight deep-caisson powder-coated steel masts around the perimeter of the turf seating bowl. Four custom-tensioned breathable high-density polyethylene (HDPE) shade membranes in desert sand and Delta blue now span 4,800 square feet of the central seating tiers, blocking 94 percent of ultraviolet rays while allowing cooling Delta breezes to pass upward.
Along the middle tier of the amphitheater bowl, masons poured a 110-foot wheelchair-accessible concrete companion terrace linked by a gentle 1:20 ramp to the Main Street sidewalk and eight new red-oak and steel accessible picnic tables. Inside the bandshell, electricians installed a 200-amp clean-power theatrical lighting dimmer rack and an assistive infrared hearing-loop transmitter.
The $390,000 Civic Center Park improvement was approved by the Oakley City Council through the Downtown Revitalization and Park Impact Fund. Event calendars are posted on the City of Oakley Parks and Recreation Portal.
