Maintenance supervisors with the City of Clayton and volunteer ambassadors from the Diablo Valley Pickleball Club cut the ribbon on Saturday evening on six dedicated cushioned post-tensioned concrete pickleball courts and shaded spectator shelters at Clayton Community Park at 6001 Marsh Creek Road at the base of Mount Diablo. Built on a previously unirrigated gravel pad east of the ballpark parking lot, the new racquet complex relieves peak-hour court crowding across Clayton, eastern Concord, and Pleasant Hill while preserving the park's existing tennis courts.
To ensure crack-free longevity across expansive clay soils, contractors poured a monolithic seven-inch post-tensioned concrete slab reinforced with high-strength steel tendons and coated the playing surfaces in a five-layer Acrytech elastomer cushion system in tournament blue and forest green. Each regulation court is separated by four-foot vinyl-coated divider fences with wide wheelchair-accessible center gates and recessed tournament net posts.
Around the north and west perimeters facing Regency Drive residences, acoustic engineers hung ten-foot-high mass-loaded vinyl sound-absorption blankets rated to reduce paddle-pop noise by 12 decibels at the park boundary. Between the two three-court banks, a 40-foot steel shade pavilion provides picnic tables, a chilled bottle-filling fountain, and color-coded next-up paddle queue racks for open rotational doubles play.
The $410,000 pickleball facility program was approved by the Clayton City Council using California State Parks Per Capita grant funds and local park impact fees. Diablo Valley players of all skill levels can review daily rotational drop-in hours and beginner clinics on the City of Clayton Community Park Portal.
