Antioch City Council Proclaims Breast Cancer Awareness Month
At its Oct. 27, 2026 meeting, the Antioch City Council voted unanimously to adopt a proclamation signed by Mayor Ron Bernal recognizing October 2026 as Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the City of Antioch, according to the Antioch Herald.
The municipal proclamation highlights the history of the annual public-health campaign, which began in 1985 as a week-long awareness effort organized by the American Cancer Society before expanding into a month-long observance, with the pink ribbon adopted in 1992 as its international symbol. The resolution notes several clinical and public-health findings:
- Globally, approximately 2.3 million women are affected by breast cancer each year.
- In the United States, about 2,800 men were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2025, with the third week of October (Oct. 17–23) recognized as Men’s Breast Cancer Awareness Week.
- Early detection through regular mammograms and clinical screenings significantly improves treatment outcomes, while Black women and individuals with a family history face elevated risks.
Through the proclamation, the council encouraged Antioch residents to support patients, survivors, caregivers, and healthcare professionals and to schedule routine screenings throughout the year.
