Antioch City Council Adopts Filipino American History Month Proclamation
Signed by Mayor Ron Bernal following the council’s unanimous Oct. 27 vote, Antioch’s proclamation recognizes the more than four-century history and civic contributions of Filipino Americans across California and the United States:
- Oct. 18, 1587 Morro Bay Landing: The proclamation notes that the earliest documented Filipino presence in the continental United States occurred on Oct. 18, 1587, when the first “Luzones Indios” stepped ashore from the Spanish galleon Nuestra Senora de Esperanza at Morro Bay, California.
- National Recognition Milestones: The Filipino American National Historical Society established the first celebration of Filipino American History Month in October 1992 to mark the anniversary of the 1587 landing. In 2009, the U.S. Congress officially recognized October as Filipino American History Month in the United States, and in October 2015 President Barack Obama led the first White House celebration.
- Trailblazing Public Officials: The proclamation highlights political pioneers including Peter Aquino Aduja, who became the first Filipino American elected to public office in the United States when he won a seat in the Hawaii Territorial House of Representatives in 1954, and Thelma Garcia Buchholdt, who in 1974 became the first Filipina American elected to any legislative body in the United States as a member of the Alaska House of Representatives.
The council urged all Antioch residents to learn more about the heritage, military service, labor leadership, and community contributions of Filipino Americans throughout Contra Costa County.
Pleasant Hill Outage Leaves 1,956 PG&E Customers Without Power Along Contra Costa Boulevard
In Pleasant Hill, PG&E reported an unplanned outage beginning at 1:39 p.m. Tuesday that left 1,956 customers without power, primarily along the Contra Costa Boulevard commercial corridor, according to Claycord.
PG&E crews were dispatched to inspect equipment and listed an estimated restoration time of 4:30 p.m. Because the outage knocked out several traffic signals along Contra Costa Boulevard, the Pleasant Hill Police Department issued a traffic advisory reminding drivers that any intersection with dark or malfunctioning traffic lights must be treated as a four-way stop under California law.
